# Build in public without burning out

> Building in public is a distribution channel, not a personality. I share cadenced proof of work. Not every emotion, not every half baked idea. So the audience grows without eating the company.

I burned out once by treating Twitter like a second full time job. Every ship needed a thread. Every miss needed a lesson. The audience got content. The product got leftovers. That’s not building in public. That’s performing productivity.

Public building works when it’s a side effect of real work, packaged on purpose. If the packaging starts driving the roadmap, you’ve inverted the company.

## Cadence over confession

I pick a rhythm I can keep on a bad week: one substantive update, maybe a short clip of something shipping. No daily diary. Confession culture looks authentic until you’re exhausted and still obliged to be interesting.

I also separate private processing from public narrative. Hard days get a notebook, not an audience. By the time I post, I’ve already decided what I believe. The feed gets a clean take, not my unedited spiral.

> If your distribution strategy requires you to be okay every day, it will eventually destroy the product it’s supposed to grow.

## Rules that keep me sane

- Share outcomes and decisions, not every intermediate emotion
- Protect customer and teammate privacy even when a story would perform
- Batch content after shipping. Never before the work is real
- Take silent weeks without announcing a “digital detox” arc

## Audience is a tool

The upside is real: hiring, feedback, distribution. I treat those wins as compounding assets, not dopamine. When a post brings users, I route them into the product loop. When it only brings applause, I notice. And I don’t chase that shape again.

Build in public like a founder, not like a creator who happens to have a startup. The company comes first. The feed is optional amplification. Keep that order and you can share for years without hollowing yourself out.
